3 Wonderful Weeks in Germany

Three boys playing with toy figures on a blanket near a lake.

Wondering what to do this summer?

Spend your time between hubs with the same community feel, support, freedom, and a bit of adventure in bite-sized pieces—welcome to a sub-hub! This is an incredible opportunity for kids to connect, as well as for parents during their summer travel in Germany. Enjoy real conversations, gentle coaching, games, and just hanging out together in a relaxed environment. Let your guard down and peacefully coexist with other families practicing child-led learning, which is a key aspect of worldschooling.

Activities will be offered throughout the day, and everything is optional, allowing you to opt in based on your family's pace and interests. We can explore local museums, zoos, playgrounds, and more, all while engaging in fun family activities in Germany.

We’re here to grow and explore as families together. Parents can tag-team throughout the day, and if you ever need time to work, rest, or simply breathe, private childcare can be arranged separately. To enhance your connection with other families, each sub-hub has private WhatsApp or Telegram groups for chatting, schedule reminders, arranging childcare, and sharing pictures.

Suggested contribution to the community per family is €150-200 per week. Families coordinate their own transportation, accommodation, and meals. The suggested contribution goes towards community events, materials, and some behind-the-scenes efforts that help keep Thrive thriving. We intentionally leave everything else out to ensure that cost, dietary restrictions, or personal standards do not prevent anyone from joining us. We’re not here to keep up with the Joneses; we’re here to support each other.

Not sure where to start with accommodations? If you prefer an AirBnB for your family while enjoying summer travel in Germany, you can click here. Just make sure to adjust the search for your specific dates and family size. Keep an open mind and don’t dismiss certain types of lodging just because you’re traveling with family. You’d be surprised at the options available—from local families who love hosting worldschoolers to hostels with private family dorm rooms, or even traveling in a camper van. The possibilities might just surprise you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at thrivesubhub@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Ai tells us that a worldschooling hub is a temporary community. We want to challenge this. We do all the same things: we offer educational opportunities, organize activities, and create space for this community to develop. The difference is that we aim to facilitate the development of a community that will be fluid and evolve over time, regardless of where we all travel to after this. Keeping in touch with each other will be a breeze as we will not close chats or remove people when they physically leave. We are people who understand how much life changes as we travel the world collecting new experiences. We are the people who understand how to keep in touch, be emotionally available to the people that matter, and offer support regardless of the miles and oceans between us. Community is not a physical space.

This particular hub is at the Berolina Camping - Süßer Winkel in Werbellinsee, on Süßen Winkel (Sweet Corner), 16244 Schorfheide, Germany. We run other hubs as well. Follow us on Facebook for updates.

This hub runs for just 3 weeks. You are welcome to come for any amount of time during this period. Some families will come for just a weekend, while others will want to make the most of their summer and really build strong connections that carry on long after this hub is over.

We aim to strike that perfect balance of small and intimate enough to really connect with each other and busy enough to never feel lonely in this adventure. Worldschoolers know that this nomadic lifestyle can feel lonely at times. Our goal is to help everyone feel that sense of belonging that helps us all thrive.

Families from all over the world are welcome and invited. The main language spoken (and written) within the hub will be English. In this hub there will also be plenty of German-speaking families, as this isn’t an exclusive area. We will do our best to ensure everyone has the same access to all communication and information we provide, regardless of your native language.

Kind of like Lego, we aim to involve and appeal to all ages. Families are encouraged to engage in activities together with their children, but there will also be activities provided for specific ages, abilities, and interests. We will modify activities as much as possible to help everyone feel truly included.

We have posted a PDF sample schedule on our website. There will be multiple activities offered throughout the day, as well as some built-in downtime. The schedule posted is called a sample schedule, as we are flexible and will make changes to best suit the needs of each group.

Ideally, since you will be participating in the activities with your children, you will be the one supervising them. There will be some activities offered that will specifically be supervised by any combination of the three of us running the hub and volunteer parents. Due to the communal nature of the hub, there will always be adults/parents present, and you are welcome to appoint anyone you deem fit to be responsible for looking after your children. We have worked as teachers, camp staff, nannies. We are background checked, trained in child care, and certified in first aid & cpr.

We do not follow a set curriculum as we are not a school. We are a community that provides educational opportunities and facilitates growth and development in natural ways. Nobody is forced to study anything they aren’t interested in. There are no tests or homework. There are just opportunities, with support and encouragement.

WiFi is available at an additional cost. While there isn’t a designated work space at the campground, many of us will be doing work while we’re there, as this is part of the worldschooling lifestyle. When we are set up, we will share any tips and arrangements we come up with to ensure it’s as easy for you as possible.

You are welcome to stay in your own tent, camper, caravan, or motorhome. All accommodations should be arranged directly through the campsite, as everyone will be able to pay for what specifically applies to them. This is not a one-size-fits-all situation; you get to make this as comfortable or as bare bones as you would like.

There is a snack bar and a bakery on site. We will be making grocery runs every few days and will be able to work with you to ensure you get what you need. We do not specifically provide meals, though some of our activities will include foods or snacks for anyone who wants.

We will have a packing list, as suggested by the campsite, posted on the website. Weather situations can vary, and of course, preferences vary as well. If you tend to run cold, bring extra layers. If you plan to swim a lot, bring plenty of towels and swimsuits. Insect repellent is highly recommended.

Absolutely! This is a family affair. We aim to include and involve families as a whole. Nobody should feel excluded for any reason other than their own choices.

There is nothing preventing you from leaving. You can come and go as you please. This is part of the reason we do not charge a fee but rather ask for a contribution to the community. As for a refund for the fees to the campground, they have their policies posted on the website. https://www.berolina-camping.de/agb/

Nomadic families, sabbatical families, long-term travellers, and homeschooling summer vacationers may be at this hub. You will be surrounded by like minded families who understand where you’re coming from and are open-minded to the fact that we all raise our families in the ways that suit our needs.

We expect to run all activities, but you are welcome to offer up ideas, activities, or volunteer to help run any of them, as you wish. We are not hierarchical in this community, and everyone is welcome to involve themselves in whatever ways are most fulfilling.

Should you sign up to join us for 1 week and realize that you want to stay longer, we are happy to have you! Any arrangements with the campsite are subject to availability. Spaces are not allowed to be sublet, so please ensure you make any changes with the main office via the official routes.

We will be in fairly close quarters and should be seeing each other frequently throughout the day. WiFi will be available, and we will be updating everyone via WhatsApp and/or Telegram. If you choose not to use WiFi, we will ensure that word of mouth travels as well as possible once everyone meets and gets to know each other. We will make it abundantly clear where we are located so that you can find us at any time.
